BBC iPlayer launches on Xbox Live, free for everyone

BBC iPlayer, the popular video-on-demand service, has finally launched on Xbox Live, Microsoft’s confirmed.

Xbox Live Screenshot

The launch means the BBC is the only UK content provider to make its programmes available for free to all Xbox 360 users in the UK, the platform holder says. It also means iPlayer is now available on every major gaming platform in the UK.

Xbox 360 users with Kinect will benefit from enhanced functionality, including playing programmes using hand gestures and voice recognition.

The BBC on-demand service has been available on PS3 since 2008. It’s widely believed that the Beeb’s request to have iPlayer available for free - rather than commercialised as part of a premium package such as Xbox Live – is the key reason it’s not appeared on Xbox until now.

Daniel Danker, BBC GM of programmes & on-demand, said of the launch: “Xbox is hugely successful in the UK. Given the BBC’s goal to reach its entire audience, I’m particularly excited that the BBC will be bringing iPlayer to all Xbox users at no extra cost as part of Xbox Live’s free membership.

“As we continue our work to make BBC iPlayer as simple as possible, we’re also excited to experiment with natural user interfaces made possible with Kinect, including voice and gesture control. We believe it’s early days for these experiences, but see a great future working with partners such as Microsoft on innovations like these.”

Xbox UK boss Stephen McGill added: “We are delighted that BBC iPlayer is now available on Xbox Live. Xbox 360 was the best-selling console in the UK and globally last year, while Xbox Live is one of the UK’s leading comprehensive VOD entertainment services on TVs.

“The addition of BBC iPlayer takes the service to the next level. We offer a formidable line-up of the best TV and entertainment – both live and on-demand – from providers such as Sky, Channel 4, Channel 5, Netflix, LOVEFiLM, Blinkbox, MSN, YouTube and many others.

“The way people interact with entertainment content is changing. Xbox LIVE is the only service in the world where you can search, discover and control TV, movies, video and music using voice and gesture via the power and magic of Kinect.”

Microsoft raises XBLA gamerscore cap

Microsoft has confirmed reports that games released via Xbox Live Arcade will soon be allowed to award players up to 400 gamerscore.

MS will raise the standard gamerscore cap on XBLA titles from the current 200 to 400 from April 1. The maximum allowed number of achievements will raise from 20 to 30. Xbox360Achievements, who sparked initial rumours of the changes, also reports that under the new policy, DLC expansions for XBLA games will be allowed to include an additional 100 gamescore spread over up to eight Achievements per update (an increase from 50 gamerscore and five achievements per update at present).

And XBLA developers will be allowed to release up to four of these DLC packs – one per calendar quarter – instead of three.

That would give XBLA titles the potential to offer up to 800 gamerscore.

Games released between April 1 and May 31 will have the option of following the new or old system. As of June 1, all XBLA games will use the new policy, confirms Microsoft.

iPad 3 Announced

So, what’d you have in the office pool? iPad 3, iPad 2S, iPad HD? Doesn’t matter, really. All that matters is that it’s here! This is the next generation of Apple’s iOS slate and, as usual, she’s a beaut — and yes, she’s still rockin’ a physical button. As was rumored this thing is packing a Retina display, potentially making this the most pixel-packed slate on the market. The 9.7-inch screen plays host to 3.1 million pixels in a 2048 x 1536 arrangement — that’s 264ppi. It’s not just a higher resolution though, the screen also boasts improved color saturation. Of course, what would a new iPad be without some updated guts. The new model has an A5X processor and quad-core graphics chip. Apple even claims its newest sliver of silicon can deliver four times the performance of a Tegra 3 — we’d say dems fightin’ words.

There’s also a new iSight camera on board that’s quite similar to the version inside the iPhone 4S. It’s only five-megapixels, but it does have a backside illuminated sensor with a five element lens. It’s also capable of capturing 1080p video, which should come as no surprise. We’re also excited to see the keyboard sporting a brand new dictation key that lets you speak instead of type — yes, just like on Android. The new software inside will also let you use the slate as a portable WiFi hotspot… so long as the carriers are game. It even has the ability to recognize at least some bezel gestures, as revealed during its iPhoto demo.

Perhaps most exciting though, is the new connectivity options — you guessed, LTE! The new iPad is sporting 21Mbps HSPA+, but it’s also rocking an LTE radio capable of pulling down 73Mbps on both Verizon and AT&T here in the US. Outside of the states Rogers, Bell and Telus will also be scoring 4G flavors of the iOS tablet. Amazingly enough, even with an LTE antenna on board, Apple is still claiming to get 10 hours of battery life. That’s probably partially do to the slightly increased weight of 1.4lbs, though the 9.4mm thickness is nothing to sniff at.

The new iPad will be available March 16th, starting at $499 for the 16GB WiFi model and scaling up to $829 for the 64GB version with 4G. So, on the price front, nothing has changed. Pre-orders start today in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, with much of the rest of the globe to follow on March 23rd. For more details hit up the PR after the break.

Trials Evolution release date leaked on Xbox.com

The people pressing buttons behind the scenes of Xbox.com have a handy knack of posting stuff pre-maturely, and their latest revelation will put a smile on the faces of Trials HD fans.

The official Xbox site apparently listed the much-anticipated sequel Trials Evolution for an April 18 release, before swiftly retracting the date.

Not, however, before Eurogamer could get a snap of the listing (pictured), clearly showing the date – which falls on a Wednesday, the typical day for XBLA releases.

RedLynx last month released an amazing trailer for Trials Evolution revealing some of the ridiculously cool stuff you can do with the new editor tools, plenty of footage of the sweet new outdoor environments you’ll be racing through.

Jet Set Radio set to return to Xbox Live Arcade and PSN

Although it doesn’t actually mention the name Jet Set Radio (or Jet Grind Radio as it was called in the US) there’s no mistaking what the trailer below is hinting at.

But although it doesn’t name names the teaser does confirm that the game is coming to both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. Since it specifically says it’s a Dreamcast game that must mean it’s the first entry in the series, originally released in 2000.

There was a sequel (and a Game Boy Advance spin-off) but that was only the original Xbox.

If you’re not familiar with the series, it feature graffiti artist Beat roller-skating his way around a fictional version of Tokyo, as he takes on rival gangs, the police and eventually an evil corporate suit.

The game is notable not only for its inventive mix of gameplay styles but also for being one of the first major titles to use cel-shaded graphics.

Jet Set Radio is also well remembered for its excellent soundtrack, which featured a wide range of licensed and in-house artists. This might not be so easy to bring back though as most other Sega games from the era have had their licensed soundtracks removed when they’ve been re-released, as the licence to use them has expired.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens with Jet Set Radio – hopefully there’ll be some confirmation of the situation when the game is officially announced.

Microsoft has released a new Xbox Live update.

It’s nothing glamorous, according to Graeme Boyd, social marketing manager for Xbox EMEA, who said on Twitter:

“Folks asking about today’s Xbox Live update. Nothing visible, just behind the scenes stuff to keep Xbox Live the best experience possible.”

Last week, an Xbox Live update was releasedto address colour issues that impacted the quality of video playback following December’s launch of the Metro Xbox 360 dashboard.

Check out the latest Xbox Live Marketplace release schedule, detailing the content coming your way between now and March 5.

In terms of modding, reports show this update doesn’t directly effect anything.
