Steam App Hits iOS and Android Market

Valve has released a new Steam Mobile app for iOS and Android devices.

Click to view larger imageBefore your jaw falls off, it doesn’t bring Steam games to mobile, but it does let you interact with Steam in many ways, including browsing the library of games, seeing when your friends are online, what they’re playing and messaging.

It’ll also let you keep up with Steam’s news posts, new sales, check out user profiles and see screenshots and user-generated content for your games.

“The Steam app comes from many direct requests from our customers,” said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. “Seeing which of your friends are online and playing a game, sending quick messages, looking at screenshots for an upcoming game, or catching a sale – these are all features customers have requested. Mobile is changing way people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone.”

The app is a beta release, and you’ll have to register your interest to get in on it. “Those who wish to join the beta just need to download the Steam app (free of charge) and log in to their Steam account via the mobile app to express interest in the beta. Gamers will be added to the Closed Beta as the service ramps up,” explains Valve.

‘Xbox 720′ to use ATI 6000 Series GPU [Rumour]

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 successor will utilise a Radeon 6000 series GPU, the latest Xbox 720 rumour report has claimed.

“Sources close to the project” apparently indicated the decision to IGN, claiming that Microsoft’s is prepping the year-old graphics processor for its new console, rather than the newer 7000 series.

The processor will be derived from the Radeon HD 6670, it’s claimed, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. You can currently buy the chip for less than £50.

The report goes on to claim Xbox 720′s raw graphics processor will boast “six times the processing power” of the Xbox 360 and “20 percent greater performance” than Nintendo’s forthcoming Wii U.

The next Xbox will ship to retailers in “late October or early November of next year”, the report concludes.

Microsoft has long spoken of its ten-year plan for Xbox 360, which launched in late 2005, but that doesn’t rule out a successor launching during the period.

European Xbox boss, Chris Lewis said in August:

“We think we’re a little over halfway with the life cycle of the console, but that’s not to say there won’t be an overlap. I’m not going to announce specifically or talk about timing. But you could imagine there could be overlap, it depends. We’re not being specific about the next generation at this stage.”

A patent discovered earlier this week has suggested that Microsoft intends its new console to be a digital video recorder, along with a game console.

US Federal Prosecutors Shut Down File Sharing Site Megaupload

File sharing website Megaupload, previously the 13th most visited site on the web, has been shut down.

US Federal prosecutors have indicated the executives of the popular service, accusing the company of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated content.

Megaupload was already duking it out with Universal following the inclusion of Kanye West and other artists from the label in a promotional video for the website.

In a week where the future of the web is open for debate, this is sure to open up another can of worms.

Max Payne 3 delayed to ‘ensure quality’

Rockstar title pushed back to May

[UPDATE: it's May 15 in North America and May 18 internationally; and for the PC on May 29 in North America and June 1, 2012 internationally.

"Max Payne 3 brings powerful storytelling back to the action-shooter genre," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "Rockstar Studios are delivering a game that's both incredibly cinematic and very, very intense to play."]

The aftershock of moving the shooter out of the fiscal quarter means Take-Two now expects to report a net loss for year 2012, it says.

“We do not take changes to our release schedule lightly, and this short delay will ensure that Max Payne 3 delivers the highest quality, groundbreaking entertainment experience that is expected from our Company,” said Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two.

“Max Payne 3 promises to be one of our most exciting releases to date, and we are confident that consumers will once again be amazed by Rockstar’s ability to take interactive entertainment to another level.

“With Max Payne 3 now slated for May, our robust lineup of upcoming releases for fiscal 2013 is even stronger, including BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Spec Ops: The Line, XCOM, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and other titles yet to be announced for release that year.

“Fiscal 2013 is poised to be one of our best years ever, with anticipated substantial revenue growth and Non-GAAP Net Income of over $2.00 per share. We are well positioned to deliver growth and profitability over the long term.”

Earlier this month, Rockstar gave us an insight into the research conducted to ensure that the vibe, culture, police, weapons and every element of São Paulo, Brazil in the game is as authentic as possible.

Rockstar Games plans to announce further details on the delay later today.

C4E’s iXtreme LTplus v3.0 for SLIM Lite-On

>> C4E released the iXtreme LT+ v3.0 CFW for the SLIM 0272/0225/0401/1071 Lite-On (Philips-LiteOn DG-16D4S) drives:

Official release of the iXtreme LT+ v3.0 for 0272/0225/0401/1071 slim Liteons
- Support for topology data on AP25 enabled titles. Will correctly answer any ap25 challenge eliminating need for dae.bin to create a backup.
- No need to make new backups everytime dae.bin is updated on console
- Extra support for rare firmwares

Topology Data
When ap25 was first introduced I devised a way of calculating any challenge which I called the silver bullet which I made reference to along time ago.
This was withheld until it was absolutely necessary. It was easier to replay the fixed challenges.
With unique per console ap25 challenges it has become necessary to use the silver bullet.
A series of measurements are taken across the disk. This topology data is then used to calculate a response to any ap25 challenge.
It is very important that the drive used to create the topology data is reliable at reading discs as bad topology data equals bad ap25 responses.
Liteon drives using 0800 v3 seem to be more accurate for this purpose. Only ap25 enabled titles require topology data. Activation of ap25 on older non-ap25 games although technically possible is highly unlikely.
Currently topology data for xgd3 titles are similar and topology data from one xgd3 title will pass on another xgd3 title although this is not advisable.
Per title title topology data is best as there are slight differences between titles and newer titles could have different topology than existing ones.

One liteon to go and four Hitachis. Have a great year everyone.

Thanks go to Team Jungle and all testers for their hard work and efforts in the development process.
Thanks also go to Team Xecuter for their support to this project.

Next Xbox and PlayStation to be revealed at next E3?

Next Xbox AND PS4 set for biggest ever E3

Both the Xbox 360 successor AND a follow up to the PS3 will be shown at E3 2012.

The LA show tease will come as Wii U launch details are locked in – and should ensure no ground is lost between competing consoles.

It will mark the very first time in the show’s 17-year history that three fresh, rival console formats will be so directly comparable.

Microsoft has long been rumoured to detail its next-gen plans at E3 2012, and recently signalled to partners this will happen, MCV has been told.

The 360 is one of the longest-serving games consoles in history. But the real surprise is an  early move from Sony. Execs at the PlayStation firm have made it clear to third-parties that they will not be left behind this time.

Execs aren’t expecting price or launch details for the new Xbox or PlayStation. But their unveiling could be a perfect spoiler to the pre-Christmas launch date and price that will be revealed for Wii U in June.

Why NOT to use POP3 for receiving emails…

Some POP3 communication.. User & PW transmitted in plain text!

Many people who use POP3 for receiving their emails alongside an email client such as Outlook may not realise the risk their putting their User Name and Password under. POP3 sends authentication details in plain text, meaning simply that if you are using someone else’s connection then you never know who might be intercepting your communications. For this reason it’s suggested that instead of using POP3 on port 110 by its self, that instead you use Encrypted POP3 on port 995 (an option in many email clients). This is a very old issue for a very old protocol and this quick article is to be considered a warning for less experienced users.

However some ISP’s or even Email providers don’t support or allow Encrypted POP3 Communication and for that reason it’s suggested that you use  a web mail equivalent, change email providers or use a connection where 3rd party interception is highly unlikely….
